Luginbuel Funeral Home,Vinita, (918) 256 - 5555 - Barbara D. (Hargrove) McMurtrey 83 -year-old longtime Vinita resident Barbara D. McMurtrey passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, July 12, 2015 with her daughter and loving caretaker Barbara Ann at her side. The second of three children, Barbara was born at home on March 20, 1932 at Blair, Oklahoma to Nolan Ivan and Dena (Cole) Hargrove. The family moved to Delaware County, Oklahoma where Barbara started school at Rural School District 16 Buzzard Springs school in 193 8 - 1939 but due to the creation of Grand Lake the family was forced to relocate which resulted in a move to the Catale community in Rogers County where she then attended rural school District #41 Greer School graduating from the eighth grade on April 25, 1947. Barbara graduated from Chelsea High School on May 17, 1951 . Barbara married Robert E. Jeans on December 30, 1950 and to this union a daughter was born on January 12, 1952 . Barbara married Guy Mickey McMurtrey on April 23 , 1954 and they made Vinita their home where they lovingly raised their daughter Barbara Ann Jeans . Barbara began employment at Eastern State Hospital in 1952 as a Nurse's Aide and was required to live in Adams Hall, the employee's dormitory to retain employment. She later worked as a secretary in the Laundry and in Patient's Property before transferring to the Recreation Department where she was the secretary and later a Recreation Aide. She finished out her working career with Cinch Connectors where she retired in 1993 as a machine operator after 22 years of service. Barbara also attended and graduated from Cosmetology School as an Advanced Operator in 1970 and operated a Beauty Shop at her home for a short time. Barbara began sewing as a young girl in 4-H, she was a red ribbon winner in the 4th Year Girls Dresses at the Rogers County Annual 4-H Rally. She continued her love of sewing becoming an excellent seamstress creating many beautiful garments including ladies suits and old-fashioned cowboy shirts and could alter any garment to fit. She also loved crocheting, cross stitch, crewel embroidery and quilting. Barbara loved to garden and grew a large variety of vegetables every summer of which she canned for her family to enjoy throughout the winter. An outstanding cook, Barbara prepared many delicious meals fresh from her garden. She also took cake decorating and candy making classes through Vo -tech, and enjoyed decorating beautiful cakes. She also grew a yard full of beautiful flowers, many of which were of the old-fashioned variety she had transplanted from her family farm. She took a flower arranging class so she could enjoy her flowers inside the house as well as in the yard. She was also successful at grafting pecan trees. A lover of pets, Barbara took a dog grooming class so she could take special care of her beloved pets Freddie and Rennie. There was no job or task too big for Barbara to tackle, she could refinish and recover furniture or keep her yard fence in good repair. Barbara was baptized at the First Baptist Church by the Reverend Charles McBee. She faithfully attended church throughout her lifetime and she thoroughly enjoyed Christian fellowship. Barbara dearly loved all of her family and she will long be remembered for her caring, compassionate and sunny disposition along with her beautiful smile. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Nolan and Dena Hargrove; husband, Guy Mickey McMurtrey; sister-in-law, Kay Hargrove; brother-in-law, Lamar "Pike" Morris; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kate and Claude Whitson; and nephew, Roy Roddy. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Barbara Ann and Don Black of Tulsa; "angel caregiver," Jovita Cruz and son Bryan; sister, Helen Morris of Vinita; brother, Bill Hargrove of Big Cabin; nieces Debbie Hopkins; Lana Daugherty; and Noni Thomason all of Vinita; nephews, Nolan Hargrove of Pryor; Ronnie Drago of Pear Blossom, CA; and a host of friends and other family members . A celebration of life for Barbara will be held Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Luginbuel Funeral Chapel with Pastor Henry "Skip" McClain officiating.
