Luginbuel Funeral Home Vinita 918-256-5555.......Dwayne LaRoe Haney, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of seventy-nine, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 29, 1939 in Vinita, the son of Ted and Helen (Campbell) Haney of Big Cabin. He was a 1957 graduate of Big Cabin High School.
After high school, he attended Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Architectural Engineering in 1961. He then attended Graduate School at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he received his Master's Degree in Social Work in 1964.
In 1960, he married Carolyn Lorraine Lee, the love of his life. Following his graduation from OU, they returned to Vinita, where they established their home and raised their three daughters. He was a loving husband and father, often coaching the softball and volleyball teams of his daughters in the Vinita Youth Recreation Program. He has served as a member of the Vinita Chamber of Commerce, and as an officer and board member of the Vinita Camp Fire Girls Association.
LaRoe was Director of the Psychiatric Social Work Department at Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, and Outpatient Clinics in Tulsa, Muskogee and Tahlequah. His department included a staff of 36 Social Workers, including 30 with their Master of Social Work Degrees. Under his direction, the department received national attention by being selected to be a national model. During his tenure, he also served for six years as ESH Practicum Supervisor for both the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools of Social Work for OU, Pittsburg State University, Northeastern State University and Oral Roberts University. He maintained his MSW, NASW and ACSW certifications throughout his career, and was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Supervisor by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers. Some of the many honors he received during his career include ESH Employee of the Month, with his nomination letter signed by an unprecedented 125 employees; Chairman of the ESH Employees' Council; President Nominee of the Oklahoma Chapter National Association of Social Workers (which he declined); Oklahoma Social Worker of the Year Nominee; Area Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Planning and Coordination Board; Craig County Title XX Needs Committee; ESH Credit Union Executive Board Officer; ESH Executive Board Officer; Grand Lake Mental Health Center Executive Board Officer; and Northeastern Oklahoma Alcohol Advisory Committee. In 1975, he participated in the National Institute of Mental Health's Impact of National Health Insurance on Services to the Mentally Ill and Mentally Disabled, and the National Conference on Social Welfare in San Francisco, California. His scientific contributions to the field of Social Work include publication of his MSW thesis to the University of Oklahoma in 1963. He retired from Eastern State Hospital in 1988 after 24 years of service.
From 1988 to 1997, LaRoe was ICF/MR Administrator at Home of Hope, Vinita, receiving certification as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and a Certified Nursing Home Administrator Preceptor by the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners for Nursing Homes and Administrators. From 1997 to his final retirement in 2015, he held dual positions with Amedisys Home Health and Cornerstone Hospice as a Board Certified Medical and Hospice Social Work Supervisor.
LaRoe often remarked that he had the best childhood he could imagine - loving parents who taught him everything and loved to travel; an older brother whom he looked up to; and a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins who allowed him to tag along for so many fun times. As a young boy, he acquired the nickname of "Red," as he was often seen sporting his Red Ryder BB gun. During his high school years, he was a starter on the Big Cabin High School Boys' Varsity Basketball Team, who won the District Championship his senior year. He loved his wife, Carolyn, and stood by her side through her own battle with cancer until her death in 1996, after nearly 37 years of marriage. His daughters and grandchildren will lovingly remember him for his intelligence, quick wit and fun personality. He loved travel, good restaurants, cars and sports, and was an avid fan of OKC Thunder basketball and OU football. He and his wife, Carolyn, traveled to many OU football games through the years. He was a member of the Vinita Church of Christ.
LaRoe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn; his brother, Ronnie; and several extended family members.
He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Tami Hockman and husband, Bill, of Vinita; Tari Lee and husband, Johnnie, of Vinita; and Tiffany Wood and husband, David, of Peyton, Colorado; five grandchildren: Austin Lee and wife, Tricia, of Big Cabin; Adam Lee and Carolyn Lee, of Vinita; Josie Wood and Sadie Wood of Peyton, Colorado; one great-grandchild: Brooklyn Lee of Big Cabin; one aunt, Pauline Lassiter of Tulsa; several sisters- and brothers-in law, and many nephews, nieces and cousins.



Services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Vinita Church of Christ at 2:00 p.m. with officiating ministers Bob Hampton and Henry McClain. Family visitation will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Luginbuel Funeral Chapel in Vinita. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Vinita under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com.
Serving as pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Bill Hockman, Johnnie Lee and David Wood; grandsons, Austin Lee and Adam Lee; and nephew, Rick Haney. Honorary pallbearers will be J.V. Haney, Dwight Helm, Ted Dixon, Garry Evans, Robert Lee, Jack Luginbuel, Henry McClain, Wayne Cearley, Doug Smith and Joey Schoeffler.
