Derrell Leon Brewington, peacefully left this life at the age of 75, on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, in Okeene, OK, where he was cared for and loved by his family for the past three years. Derrell had a great passion and love for hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. He was always sharing his knowledge, experience and time with his family and enjoyed hunting trips with "The Brewington Men."
Born on July 29th, 1948, to Chester Leon and Nora Louise Coe Brewington in Independence County, Arkansas, Derrell embarked on a journey with his family to Nowata, OK at the tender age of two. Already proven to be “tough as nails,” as a survivor to polio, he grew up and attended Nowata schools. He became an Ironman, and proudly graduated with the Class of 1966. After graduation, Derrell enrolled in the Drafting program at Okmulgee Tech (OSU IT), earning his degree in 1968. Immediately after graduation, he dedicated himself to his career, contributing significantly to road construction projects with Belco Construction for several years.
Derrell found the love of his life in Susan Rachel Robinson, with whom he exchanged vows on March 23, 1994, in Las Vegas, NV. Together, they established their home in Bartlesville, where they shared five wonderful years together. Following the untimely passing of his beloved wife, Derrell retired and ventured to Missouri, spending seven years there before settling in Okeene for the remainder of his days.
An adventurous soul to his core, Derrell loved the challenge of mastering his survival skills, crafting his own bows, and sharing his experience and wisdom with his many nieces and nephews. He made it his personal mission to make sure his family was well equipped and able to bait a hook, pull back a bow string, reload shotgun shells, or shoot at a target, a testament to his resourcefulness and ingenuity. Yet, it was his love for "Horror" movies that made him a "memorable uncle," as he eagerly introduced his nieces and nephews to the adrenaline rush of their "first scary movie" experiences, creating cherished memories that each of them cannot forget, even today. He was an avid game player of dominos, any card or board game and fought with the kids in the family over their new Lego sets, remote control cars, trucks or drones whenever possible. He was always a "kid at heart" and continually enjoyed trying out new technology toys when he saw the chance.
He is survived by his sister, Shelia Fisher, and her husband, Don of Okeene, OK; brother, Tom Brewington, and wife, Diana of Bartlesville, OK; sister-in-law, Sue Brewington of Newkirk, OK; sister, Sandie Fitch of Okeene, OK; and brother, Virgil Brewington, and wife, Debbie of Wann, OK. Derrell leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces and held a special place in their hearts for their uncle and affectionately their “unc”.
Derrell was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Leon and Nora Louise (Coe) Brewington, his beloved wife, Susan Brewington, his brother Lowell Brewington, brother-in-law Louis Fitch, and nephew Jason Brewington.
In honoring Derrell's memory, remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice. His legacy of love of the outdoors, dedication to his family, and adventurous spirit will forever be cherished and greatly missed by his friends and family, but will be carried on to the next generation through the lives he touched and influenced in so many ways. Run wild brother.
