George Hicks

George William Hicks, age 66, died Saturday April 3, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He was born May 14, 1943 in Mountainburg, Arkansas the son of Raymond Hicks and Myrtle Purdue Hicks. The family moved to Bristow, OK, then in 1946 they moved to Langley where he started school, and later moving to the Jay area where George graduated high school. George was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed fishing, hunting, caring for people and his lawn and garden. Chief Hicks has lived in Vinita for many years and joined the Vinita Police Department in 1976 and served in many capacities since, including sergeant, sergeant detective, lieutenant detective, and for the last 16 years as the chief of police. He was appointed to chief in 1994 and then elected as chief in 1995. George was instrumental in leading the department, starting many new programs, including the K-9 unit, community education programs, communication equipment and other technological equipment to make the Vinita Police Department a superior force. George has a received many citations for service as well, including, Employer of the Year by the American Legion for employment of Veterans. He was a member of the Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police, serving as a Trustee, Association of Oklahoma Narcotics Enforcers (A-ONE), and a Regional Advisor to the Department of Public Safety covering a seven county area. George is survived by his wife Debbie of the home, his children: Shelia and Pat Pier of Enid, OK, Mike and Mary Hicks of St. Louis, MO, Kenny and Lisa Hicks of Tecumseh, OK, Travis Hicks of Vinita, OK, Brandon Forson of Claremore, OK, Wade Henderson of Locust Grove, OK, Perry Henderson of Tulsa, OK and Amanda and Rodney Steddum of Chouteau, OK. Six brothers: Lonnie and Margaret Hicks of Warner Robins, GA, James and Carroll Hicks of Vinita, Lawrence and Susan Hicks of Salina, OK, Tony Hicks of Warner Robins, GA, Darrell Hicks of Texarkana, TX, Larry and Linda Hicks of Vinita, OK, two sisters: Opal and Richard Evans of Spavinaw, OK and Brenda Osborn of Muskogee, OK ten grandchildren and two great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Herman Hicks. Funeral services will be Tuesday April 6, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. at Cowboy Junction Church with Pastor Wade Markham officiating. Interment will follow at the Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Luginbuel Funeral Home of Vinita. Online condolences may be made at honoringmemories.com.
