Herbert Lungren

December 22, 1929 — December 31, 2007

Herbert A. Lungren Herbert A. Lungren, 78, prominent local businessman and beloved family patriarch, went home to be with the Lord December 31, 2007 after a long illness. "Herb" was born on December 22, 1929 in Anthony, Kansas to Herbert and Ruth Lungren. He and his sister Beverly grew up on the family farm near Caldwell, Kansas where he helped with the wheat crops, tended to the cattle and all the other duties associated with life on the farm. Herb attended Pleasant Valley Rural School and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1947. He later attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas and, shortly thereafter, joined the Air Force, where he served from 1948-1952 with the USAF Training Command, ultimately achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his service, he returned to school at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas where he graduated Cum Laude in 1953. There he met the love of his life, Darline Almack, on a blind date and was spellbound. They were married in November of 1953 in Wellington, Kansas and that feeling has been mutually shared ever since. Always the salesman, his early career moves included furniture sales, department store management, and vacuum cleaner sales. After selling a vacuum to a General Motors representative who recognized his sales talent, he launched an impressive automotive sales career that included ownership of five General Motors Dealerships over thirty-nine years. From a humble beginning as a junior partner in a small Chevrolet dealership in Mankato, Kansas in 1960, he moved on to own two dealerships in Hays, Kansas, one in Grove, Oklahoma and in Arkansas City, KS. An avid "laker" and boater, Herb and Darline retired to Grove, Oklahoma in 1989. Herb served on community hospital boards, church committees, and was active in other city development activities too numerous to mention. Professionally, he was honored by appointment to the state board of the Kansas Motor Car Dealers Association and the State of Kansas Highway Commission. Herb was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his love of 54 years, and his sister Beverly and her husband Ed Cox of Oklahoma City. In addition, he is survived by four children, daughters Kathy Baker and her husband Lowell, Terri David and her husband Dr. Mike David, all of Grove, Oklahoma, son Jeff Lungren and wife Nancy of Grove, and son Steve Lungren and wife Christi of Arkansas City, Kansas. He is adored by ten grandchildren and will be missed by a very large extended family and circle of friends. Services will be held at one-thirty p.m. on Saturday, January 5th, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, 1005 Leisure Road, in Grove Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a gift to a memorial fund established for Church improvements. Checks can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Grove, P. O. Box 450387, Grove, OK, 74345. Please note "Lungren Memorial".
