Hugh Trimble

Hugh Eldon Trimble was born September 18, 1921 in Cleora, Oklahoma to Thomas Virgil and Lockey Mae Young. He died Thursday November 10, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. Hugh worked on the farm at Cleora as he grew up. During this time he plowed with two old mules, worked his dads fields and his mother's garden as well as her flower beds. They canned every summer and always raised cattle and chickens. In the fields, they raised corn, wheat, and oats. On December the ninth 1942 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The family listened to the news on the radio. Soon, Hugh was drafted by the Navy. Hugh went on to serve his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946. The Navy started taking the islands in the Philippines. Hugh, a strong swimmer volunteered to leave the landing craft, and go in under the cover of darkness and tries and make it to the island. He swam to shore and sat under some brush and rubbish as he measured the tides. As the Japanese patrolled the shores, he hid there and then through a little metal, candle operated shutter, sent the tide measurements back to the ship so the US Landing Craft would know the water depth as they sent in the Navy and Marine Soldiers to take the beaches. During the coming weeks on the islands, he contracted "Jungle Rot" which ate a hole in his back and was not cleared up...even by the best US Doctors, for many years after his return. Still, he fought on, repairing marine motors for the Navy, working on the ship's heavy cranes, all the while dodging enemy fire incoming from the shore and the Japanese warplanes overhead. After his return and as time went by, he was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Lockey Trimble, sisters Retha Hartline, Wanda Trimble, Nina Trimble, Alta Crow, Bertha Stuck, Avenell Bryant, Patsy Trimble, brothers, Eugene Trimble, Marion (Moose) Trimble. Then, on June 21 1947 he married the love of his life Ruth Lavonne Woodall in Columbus, Kansas. Ruth Woodall had been working in Vinita and every day he went to see her. He finally asked her to marry him and she agreed. Hugh loved his wife and his family. He loved to be around children and never meet a man he didn't like. He loved to share stories of the area, and people would come out to visit him and just listen the past events of Northeastern Oklahoma. Hugh is survived by his wife Ruth, daughters Dixie Brixey and Deborah Oakley, Sons Lonnie Trimble and Larry Trimble. Eight grandchildren, Leslie Johnson, Troy King, Misty Gibson, Gingalea Coombes, Brandon Trimble, Jeremiah Trimble, Kelly King and Ashley Charles. Eighteen great grandchildren, McKenzie, Chloe, Brittany, Tiley, Trycen, Kashen, Kaden, Cameron, Nathan, Taylor, Ashlyn, Mikey, Landon, Jassi, Aidan, Case, Karma and Dashawn. Hugh still has one living sister, Katie Weaver. Funeral services will be Monday November 14, 2011 at the Luginbuel Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Johnson officiating with interment to follow in McLaughlin Cemetery under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home.
