Ida Marie "Sissy" Ham, was born, September 28, 1952 in Konowa, (Seminole County) Oklahoma. She was the second child of Stanford and Ida Josephine (McBroom) Ham. Her parents lived three miles northeast of Asher. Her grandparents were Joseph Andrew and Mary A. (Rouse) Ham and James William and May (Johnson) McBroom; Marie suffered from medical problems from the time she was 3 years old, when she was locked in an old fashioned ice box, and nearly died, but she always had a smile to give everyone. Marie started school at Asher, and attended there, until February 1964 when her family life was uprooted, and she and three brothers and one sister were sent to Whitaker State Home in Pryor, OK; Marie thrived under the care of the house parents there, but her health continued to be an issue. After a year or two, Marie was moved to other facilities to get the care she needed. Marie lived in Lawton, Konowa, and Purcell for a number of years. She loved doing crochet, embroidery, sewing and other crafts. While at the Konowa nursing center, she often assisted the elderly patients. Later on Marie was employed in the fast food industry, cleaning, working very hard, and to the best of her ability. She loved dogs, cats, and chickens, and sometimes took in so many stray animals that she was crowded in her home. Marie died Friday, June 28, 2013 in Warner, OK. She has gone to begin a new life, with angels, who gave her a sunny smile, and a stubborn determination.
