Jimmie Weeks

Jim Taylor Weeks met his final deadline on November 21, 2009 at the age of 76. Jim was born I Muskogee on May 11, 1933. He attended schools there and graduated from Muskogee High School in 1951 where he was President of the Senior Class. He attended college at the University of Oklahoma graduating with a BA in Journalism. He was a member of the Phi Delta Gamma Fraternity. After fulfilling his military obligation as part of the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma National Guard where he was stationed in Germany, Jim worked as Media Public Relations Assistant at the University of Oklahoma, Sports Writer and Sports Editor at the Lima News in Lima, Ohio, the Wichita Eagle and Beacon in Wichita, Kansas and the Odessa American in Odessa, Texas. He returned to Norman to be Sports Editor for the Norman Transcript from 1964-1990. He married Morayne (Micki) Davis in 1986. He and his wife moved to Grove in 1990 and were owners of a desktop publishing company from 1992-1997. Jim enjoyed sailing, hiking, free-lance writing, gardening and community involvement. He was a member and chairman of the Grove Planning and Zoning Commission, Grove Rotary International and where he served on the Board of Directors, and Member of the Board of Directors of Lendonwood Botanical Gardens. He was a member of the Methodist Church. During his career he received many professional achievement awards including Oklahoma Press Association State Newspaper Contest First Place Personal Columns, Oklahoma Associated Press Managing Editors Association Carl Rogan Award for Sports Writing, Oklahoma Associated Press Managing Editors Association Award for Sports Writing, American Association of College Baseball Coaches Writing Award and Texas Coaches Association Writing award. He also was the author of three books; "The Sooners: A Story of Oklahoma Football", "University of Oklahoma Football Trivia", and "Sooners Handbook". During his retirement he became interested in the history of the Grand River Dam Authority and the building of the Grand Lake of the Cherokees. He finished manuscript is still unpublished. Jim will be remembered for his sweet smile, his quiet (and subtle) sense of humor, his kindness, acceptance of other and the great stories he would tell about the people, places and events that made his career as sports writing so enjoyable. Jim is survived by his wife Morayne (Micki), daughter, Deborah Collum and her husband Jerry, two grandsons, Scotlyn and Cameron and an extended family of sister-in-law, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Live Service for Jim will be held Monday, November 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Grove, Oklahoma.
