Jo Scott

August 17, 1917 — October 12, 2006

Jo Anna Lowrey-Scott passed away Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the Claremore Indian Hospital. Jo Anna lived in Coffeyville, Kansas beside her daughter since 2005 but was a long time resident of Lenapah, Oklahoma. Jo Anna was born on August 17, 1917 at Lenapah, Oklahoma. She was raised in the Lenapah area on California Creek. She was the daughter of Richard W. Lowrey and Dema Dawson Hangs. She grew up with two brothers Billy Lee (Bid) Lowrey and Andy (Bud) Lowrey. Jo Anna enjoyed going to school at Lenapah. She had cousins who she shared a large amount of her childhood, one favorite was Lena McGinnis. Jo Anna was a member of the Cherokee Indian Tribe. Jo Anna married E.W. (Buck) Scott at Claremore, Oklahoma on April 21, 1934. They then moved to the Lenapah area to start raising a family. Surviving Jo Anna are Paul and Christine Scott of Tri Cities, Washington (4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren), Earl and Joyce Scott of Bartlesville, Oklahoma (3 children and 3 grandchildren), Dorothy and Joe King of Lenapah, Oklahoma (3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren), Jim and Annette Scott of Bennington, Kansas (4 children and 6 grandchildren), Betty and Everett Smith of Coffeyville, Kansas (1 child and 2 grandchildren), Johnny and Diane Scott of Hutchinson, Kansas (2 children and 2 grandchildren), Robert and Betty Scott of St. Mary's, Georgia (3 children and 7 grandchildren). Jo Anna loved raising her family in Lenapah. Along with being a very active wife, homemaker, mother, and grandmother, Jo Anna was a member of the Baptist Church in Lenapah. Jo Anna enjoyed participating in the local Home Demonstration Club and making clothing and jellies for the local Nowata County Fair each year. Jo Anna was an active member of Tops Club in Nowata where she developed a close relationship with many of the members. Jo Anna enjoyed going to basketball and baseball games with her daughter Dorothy to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play. She also enjoyed swimming trips to her son's house with her granddaughter Vicki. But, one of the most important things Jo Anna did for her family was to develop and nurture that familiar Sunday Dinner with fried chicken and all the family around her table. She loved preparing deserts for all the family to enjoy at these large dinners, providing for extras to take home. Jo Anna is preceded in death by her loving husband E.W. (Buck) Scott; by 4 grandchildren, Paula Scott, Christopher Scott, Patrick Scott, and Ricky Scott; by 2 great-grandchildren, Brandon Scott and Cody White; and by 1 brother Billy Lee (Bid) Lowrey. Jo Anna moved to Coffeyville in 2005 to live near her daughter Betty Smith. During this time, other members of the family would be in and out of the house taking her to different events. Three weeks ago during a nice visit with her oldest son Paul, Jo Anna became ill and was rushed to the hospital. As her health began to fail, children and grandchildren provided a vigil caring for their beloved mother and grandmother. Jo Anna's last days were full of family gathering around her, each understanding that Jo Anna was the string that binds each one of them together. Jo Anna the individual and Jo Anna the mother and grandmother will be missed by her family deeply.
