John Horn

John Horn was born on September 19, 1918, in Muldrow, Oklahoma. He was the son of Orien Horn and Eda (Garner) Horn. He attended first grade in the Muldrow community schools; second grade in Lawton, Oklahoma schools and third and fourth grades in the Altus, Oklahoma community. From 1928-1932, he attended the Fort Smith, Arkansas Community schools and graduated with the Senior Class of 1934 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He then attended Arkansas State University at Jonesboro where with honors he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry in 1938. John began his employment with Phillips Petroleum Company on July 3, 1939 in Borger, Texas, in the natural gas and gasoline activities. In December 1941, John was called to active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army; therefore, his employment with Phillips was put on temporary hold. While in the U.S. Army, he was involved in making three assault landings in the Pacific and he served 39 months in the South Pacific Theater with the Army Field Artillery. John was released from active duty in April 1946. His World War II decorations included the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with three Battle Stars, plus Bronze Arrowhead from Assault Landings, Bronze Star Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. After four years of loyal service to his Country, he was honorably discharged. He returned to his employment at Phillips on February 1, 1946, as Senior Engineer, Gas Sales Division, Bartlesville. On October 20, 1946, John and Miss Lenore Emilie Schierding were united in marriage at St. Charles, Missouri. In 1948, Phillips transferred John to Houston, Texas as Gulf Coast Representative in the Phillips Natural Gas Department and in 1955, he returned to Bartlesville as Technical Adviser to the Natural Gas Department Manager. In 1957, John became Assistant Manager, Natural Gas Sales and in 1964, he became the Manager of Natural Gas Sales. In 1979, he was promoted to Manager, Worldwide Gas and Liquid Natural Gas Sales Division and in 1982, he became Manager, Worldwide Special Projects Division, Gas and Gas Liquids Group. John was Chairman of the Gas Supply Task Group for the preparation of the National Petroleum Council study entitled, "U.S. Energy Outlook". John's memberships included Redeemer Lutheran Church, Bartlesville; Senior Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME; Fellow in the Institute of Petroleum, London; American Gas Association; Cryogenic Society of America; Natural Gas Men of Houston; Natural Gas Association of Oklahoma; Gas Men's Roundtable of Washington, D.C.; and Distinguished Lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, 1983-1984. After retirement from Phillips Petroleum Company on January 1, 1984, Mr. Horn opened his International Consultant Office in Bartlesville. He was appointed Vice Chairman of Yukon Pacific Corporation of Anchorage, Alaska in 1986 and he served in that capacity until 2008. Mr. Horn was a pioneer in the development of the natural gas business in the U.S, Europe and Asia. John was also a pioneer in the development of the liquefied natural gas business and introduced the first supplies of LNG into Japan in 1969 from Alaska. He also wrote numerous papers and gave many speeches at International Conferences on the subject of Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas. He was also an advisor to the World Bank on Natural Gas in developing countries. John enjoyed: traveling, fishing and his family (especially his grandchildren). He will be remembered as always being on the go and his infectious smile will be greatly missed. John is survived by: his son, Chris A. Horn and his wife, Susane, of Corpus Christi, Texas; two daughters, Frances A. Payton of The Woodlands, Texas, and Miriam A. (Mimi) Yeager and her husband, Kevin, of Anchorage, Alaska; two grandsons, Jason Horn and his wife, Stephani, of Bartlesville and Courtney N. Horn, U.S.A.F, Offutt AFB, Nebraska. John was preceded in death by: an infant son; his parents; his wife, Lenore Emilie Horn on November 23, 1994; one son, Scott A. Horn on February 17, 1996; three sisters: Virgene Horn in 1984, Alice Horn Bryant in 1993, and Orieda Anderson in 2011.
