Joseph David Hindman, Jr., 85-year-old former Nowata resident, passed away Monday, January 1, 2007 at the St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa. Joseph David Hindman, Jr. was born September 13, 1921 in Mercer, Pennsylvania to Joseph David Hindman and Lois Olive Weaver-Hindman. Mr. Hindman grew up and attended schools in Nowata. After graduating from high school, he attended Oklahoma Military Academy from 1939-1941. Mr. Hindman then went on to serve his country in the United States Army Air Corps from October of 1942 until August of 1947. While in the service Mr. Hindman served as a Navigator aboard a B-24 with the 15th Air Force, 456 Bomb Group stationed in Italy. After his military service, Mr. Hindman used the GI Bill to complete his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah where he received his Bachelor's Degree. Mr. Hindman then became employed at Phillips Petroleum where he was a Safety Consultant until his retirement in 1986. He was an active OMA alumnus and also spent a great deal of his spare time as an amateur HAM radio operator. On December 29, 1950, Mr. Hindman married Mary Isabel Hifler in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She preceded Mr. Hindman in death on October 30, 2006. Mr. Hindman is survived by two sons, Richard and his wife Deborah Hindman of Calvert, Texas and James Hindman of Phoenix, Arizona; by a grandson, Joseph Ryan Hindman and his wife Kelli; by a granddaughter, Devin Christine Malaise and her husband Chuck; and by a great-grandson, Hayden Marshal Malaise. Mr. Hindman was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife; by two brothers, William E. Hindman and Richard W. Hindman; and by two nephews, Chris Hindman and John Hindman.
