Lavern Charles

LaVern Charles, 84, longtime resident of Big Cabin and recently Vinita, Oklahoma, went to Heaven on September 12, 2019, surrounded by her family, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She was born on September 9, 1935 in Big Cabin, Oklahoma to Chester Lee Pitts and Daisy Mildred (Dye) Pitts. She graduated from Big Cabin High School in 1953. On August 8, 1953 she married Bobby (Bob) Harlton Charles in Big Cabin. In 1950, LaVern accepted Jesus as her Lord and savior and was baptized in Big Cabin Creek. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Big Cabin. She served in the church nursery for many years and enjoyed Bible study and many church activities. For many years she cared for children in her home, and enjoyed teaching each one their numbers, letters, shapes, colors, sharing, and many other things. LaVern loved each one and had fond memories of them which she cherished throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling on family vacations and seeing the country. She and Bob frequently visited Treasure Lake Resort in Branson, Missouri and enjoyed miniature golf and the many other activities with her family. LaVern enjoyed cooking for loved ones. She made the best bread. She loved being outdoors and all the flowers and plants surrounding her home in Big Cabin, which she and Bob had planted. LaVern loved her family and friends. She was dearly loved by them.

LaVern was preceded in death by her parents, Chester Lee Pitts and Daisy Mildred (Dye) Pitts; her husband of over 50 years, Bobby (Bob) Harlton Charles; one sister, Wilma Jane Pitts; one brother, Troy Pitts; one sister-in-law, Patricia Pitts; and one granddaughter, Courtney Ann (Collins) Jarvis.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Sherry and Rickey Tuell of Pryor, Dana and Joe Collins of Vinita, Robert and Sandy Charles of Bartlesville; three sisters, Geneva and Bill Breazeale of Verdigris, Betty and Ray Breazeale of Big Cabin, Kay and Justin Turner of Vinita; a brother, Bobby and Jane Pitts of Foyil; brother and sister-in-laws, Leon and Fay Charles of Vinita, Ruby and Rex Horner of Centerville, Tennessee, Larry and Pat Charles of Shepherdsville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Jennifer and Matt Hinson of Vinita, John T. Collins of Tulsa, Ryan and Kelly Charles of Oklahoma City, Shannon and Jason King of Edmond; great grandchildren, Kesley and Sam Shepard of Berryhill, Kylie Hinson of Vinita, Matthew Hinson of Stillwater, Lillian Hinson of Vinita, Reed and Luke Charles of Oklahoma City, Carter King of Edmond; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and a host of friends.

Services for LaVern Charles will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Big Cabin Baptist Church with Pastor Shane Culp officiating. Burial will follow at the Big Cabin Cemetery.
