Maynard Mayhew

Benjamin Funeral Service - Nowata, Oklahoma........ On January 22nd 1935 a son was born to Bert and Lela (Vaughn) Mayhew on Lighting Creek, Nowata County. He was given the name Maynard Oliver Mayhew. Maynard attended Madden schools through the eighth grade. He completed his education at Lincoln High school, where he graduated in 1953. Maynard attended Visitors Chapel A.M.E Church where he served as a deacon until the church closed. He then united with Mount Olive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon until his health got too bad. Maynard worked as an orderly at the Nowata Hospital for many years. After leaving the hospital he became employed by Peabody Coal Company, where he was a drill operator for many years. Maynard was a jack of all trades. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. On January 10, 1957 he was united in marriage to Rita Marie Martin. Five children were born to this marriage, two boys and three girls. Maynard passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2015, at his home in Nowata, OK. He is preceded in death by his parents Bert and Lela, his wife Rita and one great granddaughter Kerrington Mayhew. He is survived by two sisters, Maxine Rogers of Wichita, KS and Frances (George) Grimmett Jr. Of Nowata, OK, two sons Maynard (Chevela ) Mayhew Jr., Of Denver, CO Ellis Mayhew of Nowata, OK, three daughters Laurita (John) Vanfield, Tulsa, OK, Tammy (Verl) LeFlore, Deer Park, TX and Tonya (Leonard) Thomas Sr. Nowata, OK , sixteen grandchildren, including Marquis and Latoya whom he raised, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces , nephews and godchildren. Funeral services for Maynard are 11:00a.m., Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the First Baptist Church on Mississippi Street with Pastor Anthony Nash officiating. Interment will follow at Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com
