Graveside funeral services Opal Phyllis Howard will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Nowata, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service of Nowata. Phyllis Howard was born February 18, 1922, in Nowata Oklahoma to William H. and Gussie Elizabeth (McPeters) Carpenter. She passed from this life at her daughter's home in Edmond, Oklahoma, Wednesday, February 13, 2013. She was a graduate of the Nowata High School Class of 1939. On July 19, 1941 she married the love of her life Paul Louis Howard, in Nowata. They lived in Nowata, Vinita, Miami, Hominy, Pawhuska, and Oklahoma City before opening a grocery store in Wilburton, Oklahoma. In her younger years she enjoyed playing golf and babysitting her grandchildren. She loved to cook, care for her family, and play bridge with her friends. She was an avid reader and liked to watch OU and OSU women's basketball on TV. Throughout her life she was a perfect example of courage, sacrifice, and proud survivor of breast cancer. She was a loving, kind, gentle, thoughtful, unselfish, and gracious lady and will be missed by her family and friends. Phyllis is survived by two children, Paula Sanford and husband Bill of Edmond, Phillip Howard of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Chad Sanford, Todd Sanford, Scott Sanford, Vince Howard, Sara Howard and six great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Gussie Carpenter, her husband, Paul Louis Howard and two siblings, William (Bill) Carpenter and Edith Evelyn Estes. Memorials in Phyllis's name may be made to the Edmond Senior Center at 2733 Marilyn Williams Drive, Edmond, OK 73003. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com.
