Roy Wright

Roy "Chuck" Wright was born April 10, 1920 and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 29, 2013 at the age of 93. He was born on White Water, Delaware County, to Thomas and May (Caudill) Wright, who were farmers. Chuck was a bass player and his career and talent as a musician took him all the way to the Grand Ole Opry. His playing was interrupted by WWII and he served in the 404th Field Artillery under Gen. Patton. Upon returning from the war, he joined the Willis Brothers and they formed a group called the Oklahoma Wranglers. When they performed Chuck would wear full Indian Attire and headdress. They were the opening act for Eddy Arnold and Chuck would stay on stage to perform with Eddy Arnold and Roy Wiggins. Chuck played bass in the recording studio for Hank Williams, Sr. and can be heard on 90% of Hank's classic recordings, including Kaw-Liga. The drum sound in the recording is actually Chuck playing his bass. In 1949, Chuck went to Hollywood and made two movies starring Eddy Arnold, "Feudin' Rhythm" and "Hoedown". He also appeared on the Milton Berle Show. After retirement, Chuck moved back to Grove in 1974 and later joined with a group of friends to form The White Water Boys. They preformed locally for nursing homes and charitable events. The group consisted of Dolphus Blevins, John Masters, Bob Jenkins, and Chuck. After the boys quit performing, Chuck and his friends, Milford Wedel, Ellwood Bath and Garol Longan formed a group known as The Golden Years Band. His talent and natural feel for music brought him so much joy. He continued to play until near the end. He was a Life Member of the Nashville Musicians Union. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma; 4 brothers, Abraham, Ace, James and infant Charles; 3 sisters, Opal, Ella, and infant Marjorie; daughter, Dixie Jones, and stepson, Michael Dan Patrick. He is survived by his daughter, Nanette Johnston and husband Kenn, of Grove; son Ron Wright and wife Jean, of Grove; Stepdaughter, Jenny Fields, of Copan, OK; three grandchildren, Krysta McRae, of San Jose, CA; Chuck Potashner, of London, England; Amy Schott, of Mansfield, TX; great-grandson, Hayden Moseley of Mansfield, TX; sisters, Lola Rogers, of Claremore, OK; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and fans. Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday July 2, 2013 at Butler Cemetery with Reverend Jim Pelley officiating. Services are entrusted to Worley Luginbuel Funeral Home of Grove.
