Yakima Brumley

Luginbuel Funeral Home Vinita, 918-256-5555........Former Bluejacket Superintendent Yakima Brumley passed away Friday, March 23, 2018 in Miami, Oklahoma. He was born May 22, 1925 in Ada, Oklahoma to Ed and Theo-Lillian (Higley) Brumley. Yakima graduated high school in Ada, OK. After graduation he served in the U. S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Upon returning home Yakima attended East Central University in Ada and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in Tahlequah. He then obtained a Master of Science degree from Oklahoma State University where he also worked on his doctorate. Yakima began his teaching profession at Centralia, then later served at White Oak, Childers, Lenapah, Copan and Bluejacket. He finished his teaching career in Bluejacket where he served as superintendent from 1973 until 1978 when he stepped down and became a classroom teacher. Yakima retired after 34 years in the teaching profession, 21 of those years spent coaching and teaching. After retiring, Yakima enjoyed his days hunting, fishing, and gardening. Yakima belonged to the Kelso Faith Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. A few of Mr. Brumley's many accomplishments were, All State baseball coach in 1966, board of electors for the Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame, president of the county teachers' organization in Nowata, Washington, and Craig counties, treasurer of the Northeast District Teachers Association, 1979 State Fair of Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, Craig County Teacher of the Year in 1980, and 2017 Oklahoma Union School District Hall of Fame. Preceding Yakima in death are his parents Ed and Theo-Lillian (Highley) Brumley; former wives Wanda (Coday) Brumley mother of his children, Lucille (Peevey) Brumley; one son Randy Brumley; one daughter Karen Huntley; and all his brothers and sisters. Survivors include wife Vella Brumley of the home; one grandson Christopher Huntley and wife Kathryn of Yuma, Arizona; one great granddaughter, Courtney Call and husband Kevyn; one great-great grandson, Tytan Call. Visitation for Yakima Brumley will be held Friday, March 30, 2018 from 6-8:00 pm at the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be held Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 pm in the Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com.
